The Anime and Manga genres are filled with romances. Though there are a few Anime TV shows over the last 3 decades that have spawned some of the most unconventional anime couples. From sinister and disagreeable beginnings into the most unbreakable of relationships. Here's 7 of our favourite Unconventional Anime Couples.
1. Blade and Aki (Tekkaman Blade)
Tekkaman Blade (released as Teknoman in English speaking countries) was a Japanese Anime TV series that was produced and created in 1992 by Tatsunoko Productions and Sotsu Agency. The series follows an organisation known as Space Knights who are the last line of defense in a war against a race of extraterrestrial aliens known as the Radam. Prior to the Radam invasion, a family of astronauts and scientists were captured and converted into powerful Radam warriors called Tekkaman.
The series lead protagonist is Blade, who was captured but not fully converted by the Radam, as he strives to rid the earth of these Tekkamen (who were once his family) who seek to destroy it. Despite being heavily involved in the Space Knights team and Blade's struggle with the Radam invasion force – one of the ongoing story arcs is the relationship between Blade and Aki.
As an Anime Couple, Blade and Aki's relationship was a problematic one at best. Filled with her need to look after Blade while he ignored every kind gesture she made. Instead, Blade spent more time concentrating on the war at hand with the Radam fleet. In the end, Tekkaman Blade was cruel towards this Anime couple, considering they only officially got together after Blade was injured, amnesiac and confined to a wheel chair at the end of the series.
2. Krillin and Android 18 (Dragon Ball Franchise)
The Dragon Ball franchise is probably the most famous Manga and Anime franchise (with the exception of Pokemon and Astro Boy). Characters that are synonymous with the Dragon Ball franchise which come to mind include: Goku, Gohan, Piccolo, Frieza, Cell, Vegeta, and Bulma. We don't often mention Krillin in open Dragon Ball discussions as one of the more interesting characters. Because, let's face it, he's not. By the time we get to Dragon Ball Z, Krillin becomes the quintessential fall guy or comedic element who offers meaning of life commentary.
This all changes when Krillin meets Android 18 in Dragon Ball Z during the Android and Cell Sagas. What starts of as a relationship of bitter enemies ends up in loving relationship and pseudo-marriage by the end of Dragon Ball Z. Krillin and Android 18 are an interesting Anime Couple to say the least. Krillin has highly emotional and fearful needs which are balanced by Android 18's logical and pragmatic thinking. Not to mention her nigh unstoppable power as a Dr Gero branded killing machine.
It's always a fun time watching Krillin and Android 18 interact as a married couple and parents. Though not nearly as much fun as it was watching Android 18 freak out Krillin in the early days during the Android saga. With unsolicited licks to the face and creepy one liners that sent chills down his spine. Android 18 and Krillin are easily my favourite Anime Couple of the Dragon Ball franchise.
3. Andy Bogard and Mai Shiranui (Fatal Fury)
Based on the video game of the same name, Andy Bogard and Mai Shiranui are the only Anime Couple in Fatal Fury: Legend of the Hungry Wolf that are worthy of mention. The short lived television series and Fatal Fury Motion Picture depicts brothers Terry Bogard and Andy Bogard (voiced by Keiichi Nanba) as Martial Arts experts. Training is the hallmark of this show as they plan for the day to go up against Geese Howard, who killed their father.
Terry Bogard, as a headstrong drifter and barely functional alcoholic is the antithesis of Andy Bogard who is an emotionless and soft spoken warrior of honour and virtue. So much so, that despite Mai Shiranui's flirtatious and scantily clad nature, I'm sure that Andy Bogard is a virgin too!
As an Anime Couple, Andy Bogard and Mai Shiranui are a confusing pair. While Andy trains feverishly in adapting and perfecting his own style of Martial Arts, Mai spends her time lazing about in a geisha wrap which leaves very little to the imagination. Mai's love for Andy is rooted more in obsession and infatuation while Andy's love for Mai is rooted in the need to not be alone.
4. Sailor Moon and Tuxedo Mask (Sailor Moon)
Sailor Moon, originally translated as Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon and later as Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon, (and we're thankful that didn't stick) was originally a Japanese shojo manga series written and illustrated by Naoko Takeuchi. Sailor Moon was serialised into 60 different chapters and appeared in the monthly manga magazine, Nakayoshi, from 1991 until 1997.

Sailor Moon follows schoolgirl Usagi Tsukino and when she transforms into Sailor Moon, thanks to the 'Legendary Silver Crystal.' Throughout the series, Sailor Moon teams up with and leads a group of Sailor Soldiers (made up other school girls) on their various adventures and as they do battle with their enemies who would do harm to the Solar System and, consequently, the earth.
Throughout Sailor Moon's many adventures she is aided by Tuxedo Mask. A guardian of the earth and with his own powers, Tuxedo Mask moves quickly from a simple guardian who aids the Sailor Squad. To Sailor Moon's confidante and boyfriend. Despite a sweet relationship, there's often an element of strange forever present with this Anime Couple as Tuxedo Mask represents an air of mystery while Sailor Moon's innocence teeters on the edge of obsession with the Masked Guardian.

5. Brock and Misty (Pokemon)
The original series of Pokemon landed on our Television screens back in 1997. Since then every parent has been victimised by the onslaught of never-ending Pokemon merchandise. In the very first season of Pokemon, Ash Ketchum journeyed out into the world accompanied by two companions: Brock and Misty. And although Brock and Misty never hooked up in strictest sense because c'mon guys they're kids. They did have an ongoing friendship to rival the most seasoned of on-screen Anime Couples.
When Ash was busy looking at the next Pokemon Gym Badge to win, Brock and Misty were busy feuding and fighting in ways that old couples only can. It was beyond cute. So cute that it added an air of comedy to the fantasy world of Pokemon whilst Ash Ketchum was caught up in his own adventures. In a world filled with the Anime Couple stereotype, Brock and Misty are the youngest of Old Couples.
6. Legoshi and Haru (Beastars)
Beastars is a Japanese anime that is written and illustrated by Paru Itagaki. It is also one of the most recent animes mentioned in this Anime Couple article. The story of Beastars takes place in a modernised society of an alternate earth, populated by anthropomorphic animals and beasts. When the series starts there's a truce (of sorts) in place which forbids carnivores consuming herbivores.
The series centres around Cherryton Academy, where Legoshi (a wolf) goes to school with a group of other carnivores and herbivores. Out of nowhere, an Alpaca classmate is brutally murdered by an unknown carnivore and shortly thereafter, Legoshi has an encounter with Haru (a dwarf rabbit), where he bites her and gets a taste for herbivore meat. This sets Legoshi down a path of obsession, love and confusion – as he's not sure whether he wants to have sex with Haru or eat her alive.
Legoshi and Haru's relationship, if you could call it that, is a complex one. As an Anime Couple it ranges from obsession and lust to hunger and survival. The lines between Legoshi's want to eat Haru and want to have a romantic evening with her are often blurred. The Netflix series has done a great job in capitalising on the Beastars' rollercoaster ride of an Anime series.
7. Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades (Castlevania)
Castlevania is a Netflix Original Anime Production, based on the Japanese video game series of the same name by Konami. Written by Warren Ellis, the story of Castlevania takes place at the height of Dracula's power. When his wife is burnt at the stake after being falsely accused of Witchcraft, Dracula summons the full force of demonic and undead forces to destroy the people of Wallachia. To combat this, outcast drunk and monster hunter Trevor Belmont takes up arms against Dracula's forces aided by the magician Sypha Belnades and Dracula's son Alucard.
Throughout seasons 1-2 of Castlevania, the relationship between Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades is one simply of colleagues working together to survive. However, this soon blossoms into an awkward romance in Season 3. With Dracula gone and demonic forces spread out across earth, Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades set out to find and hunt them down.
As an Anime Couple, Trevor Belmont and Sypha Belnades' relationship is an antagonistical one. With Trevor's fuelling alcohol addiction and Sypha's sarcasm – on more than one occasion the romance boat is rocked. Sypha is typical of the want and need to change a man with emotional scars he wears on his sleeve in every episode.
